Top Ten Uses For Used Ground Coffee..

Plant Food

As any green fingers out there can attest, a healthy sprinkling of coffee grounds throughout your garden can help to create some extra acidity in the soil. This works perfectly for roses, blueberries, carrots, radishes, and so many other plants.

A natural repellent

Whilst staying on the theme of garden maintenance, did you know that used grounds can actually work to keep away any pesky snails and slugs. It’s not just them as well, coffee grounds can also be used to deter ants. So, when summertime rolls around sprinkle the grounds in places you want to be ant free and ta da! Insect free summer bliss.

Exfoliate Your Skin

If you’ve read our previous blog: Ten Things You Might Not Know About Coffee, then you’ll know that this magical bean can work wonders for your body internally, but did you know it can also be used externally! The coarse particles of the grounds mixed with a little water and coconut oil, makes the perfect body scrub leaving you looking and smelling great.

Under-eye mask

With the winter blues rolling in we all want to look our best and used coffee grounds may just be your new best friend. Using the same mixture for the body scrub, apply this under your eyes and leave it for approximately 10 minutes then rinse away. Repeat daily or just when you want a pamper.

Melting Ice

With the temperature dropping there’s no doubt that ice will soon be to follow and used grounds can work as a natural alternative to the grit that you may lay down. The chemical balance within the coffee will prevent freezing for the most part and even melt some of the ice. All whilst providing some much-needed traction.

Flea remover

If you want to try an eco-friendly alternative to treating fleas on your pets, then used grounds may be the answer you’re looking for. Surprisingly, fleas don’t seem to like coffee so a quick scrub through your pet’s fur after shampooing may just do the trick to banish them in mild cases. However, this tip does come with a WARNING! Make sure you thoroughly rinse them off before conditioning and don’t let your pet eat any of the grounds, as for dogs in particular, they can be toxic.

Natural Scrub…For your pans this time

I know, we were suspicious about this fact too but after testing it out on our own pans we can confirm that it does work! Add a generous amount to your pots, pans, and scrub away. The coarse texture of the grounds helps to lift away any stubborn bits of food stuck to the bottom. Don’t forget to rinse well after washing though.

Car Air Freshener

As coffee lovers we all know the blissful smell that comes from freshly made coffee and now you can take that smell on the road with you. This tip does rely on you having a good memory however, as it calls for fresh grounds to be put in a small container (about the size of a mini jam jar) every other morning to keep the smell strong.

Neutralize Odours

Surprisingly absorbent, used grounds work as an effective way to neutralize any lingering odours you may have in your fridge or cupboard. Fill a bowl or cup and leave the dry grounds in any desired location. Be careful not to knock them over though!

Coffee Logs

If you have a log burner at home or know someone who does why not give coffee logs a try. Made with a mixture of used grounds, wax, and molasses you can build yourself a fire that burns 20% hotter and for longer. Not forgetting the best part, when burnt they smell like coffee!

Please do your own research before trying any of these ideas.
